Before and After a Colonic – What to Expect

What is a colonic and what happens during one?

A colon cleanse is when large amounts of water are flushed through the colon by inserting a tube, which is a colon hydrotherapy instrument, into the rectum. Warm water will then pass through the colon helping to eliminate waste from your body that is sticking to the colon walls.

Before you get a colonic, you will want to ask your primary care physician if a colonic is a good idea based on your health. When you get a colonic you should also be sure to stay hydrated before and after the treatment. You may have an increase in bowel movements within the first few hours.

After the session, some people report feeling lighter, however this isn’t the case for everyone. Some people report feeling less bloated, and even experiencing a more even complexion. Those who have undergone the treatment often say they experience no pain, but occasional cramping.

It is important to note that though colonics may seem like a popular form of detoxifying the body, some medical professionals warn against them. Anyone interested should talk to their doctor beforehand to learn the potential risks associated with colonics. Contact us for an appointment.

Gut Bacteria and Local Colonics Near Me

Your gut bacteria are important for your immune system, heart, weight and many other aspects of health. An imbalance of healthy and unhealthy microbes is sometimes called gut dysbiosis, and it may contribute to weight gain.

Certain healthy bacteria in the microbiome can also improve gut health. Certain Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, which are found in probiotics and yogurt, can help seal gaps between intestinal cells and prevent leaky gut syndrome.

Certain bacteria within the microbiome convert choline and L-carnitine, both of which are nutrients found in red meat and other animal-based food sources, to TMAO, potentially increasing risk factors for heart disease. other bacteria within the gut microbiome, particularly Lactobacilli, may help reduce cholesterol.

The gut microbiome plays a very important role in your health by helping control digestion and benefiting your immune system and many other aspects of health. To help support the growth of healthy microbes in your gut, eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fermented foods.

Learn More about Colonics

What is a colonic?

“Colonic” is short for “colon hydrotherapy“, which is a colon cleansing that is much safer and easier than your typical enema. An enema reaches only the rectum and lower part of your colon whereas with colon hydrotherapy the entire length of the colon is cleansed. Many people look forward to their colonic sessions as it leaves them feeling both refreshed and relaxed. The system I have is called the ‘Angel of Water’. It uses single-use, sterile rectal nozzles…which you will insert yourself.

How does the colonic work?

I follow a multi-stage sanitation protocol that uses a triple filter water system. The procedure requires you to lay back in a comfortable, relaxed position while a gentle flow of gravity-fed water evacuates the contents of your colon. The actual session time is 30-40 minutes, but you should plan on about 1 ½ hours for your first consultation with session. The only prep for the session is to refrain from eating 2 hours before. After having the session, you can go to work just as you would after having a regular bowel movement.

Is hydrotherapy treatment safe?

Yes! Using our state of the art Angel of Water equipment, a colonic is safer and easier than an enema.

What’s the difference between a colonic and an enema?

While an enema only reaches a small portion of the rectum and lower colon, a colonic can reach the entire length of the colon. It is much more effective as well. One colonic can be as effective as 30 enemas.

Will it hurt?

No. Many report that their hydrotherapy session was calming and they left feeling refreshed.

How much will the colonic cleanse?

Each session is different for each person, but it is possible to cleanse the entire length of the colon during a professionally administered hydrotherapy session.

Is there any reason I shouldn’t have a colonic?

While most people are eligible for hydrotherapy treatment, there are some health conditions such as congestive heart failure and certain times of pregnancy that make it wise to avoid a colonic at that time.

Can I catch a disease from a colonic?

The Angel of Water uses disposable nozzles. Each person receives a brand new, sterilized rectal nozzles each time. The Angel of Water also uses a multi-stage sanitation protocol that leaves no possibility of contamination.

How long will it take?

Each colonic takes about 40 minutes, but you should plan for at least 1 1/2 hours for your very first session which includes a consultation.

What if I’m on my period?

You may still have a colonic during your menstrual period. Some women feel it is an appropriate time to have a hydrotherapy session since your body is already cleansing. However some prefer to wait until their period is over. It’s a matter of personal preference.

Do I have to do anything to get ready for a colonic?

The only thing you should do before your colonic is abstain from eating for 2 hours prior to your appointment.

Will I have discomfort or feel tired after my session?

While everyone is different, most people are not affected by their session. Some say they felt slightly tired after their session.

Do I need to take the day off from work?

No! You can go back to work as soon as your colonic is over.

Will I be alone?

No. A certified Angel of Water practitioner will be available to you during your entire colonic. She will ensure you are safe and comfortable while also maintaining the privacy you desire.
